To participate in the Supported Independent Living (SIL) program, young adults must meet a comprehensive set of eligibility requirements, blending criteria from Extension of Foster Care Services, educational and employment achievements, and personal commitment to the program’s duration and activities.

SIL Participant Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Extension of Foster Care Eligibility:
    • Must be turning 18 while under DSS care and pre-approved for Extension of Foster Care Services, or
    • Already approved and active in Extension of Foster Care Services, or
    • Seeking to re-establish Extension of Foster Care Services before reaching the age of 21.
  2. Educational and Employment Criteria (meeting at least one):
    • Completing secondary education or a program leading to an equivalent credential, such as GED preparation.
    • Enrolled in a post-secondary or vocational institution, including universities, colleges, or trade schools.
    • Engaged in a program aimed at enhancing employability or removing employment barriers.
    • Employed for a minimum of 80 hours per month.
    • Unable to pursue educational or employment activities due to a medical condition impacting participation.
  3. Program Participation Commitment:
    • Commitment to completing the 18-month SIL program.
    • Willingness to engage in weekly life skills training sessions.
    • Openness to working with individuals of diverse and strong personalities.
    • Participation in both group and individual mental health counseling as well as life skills training.
    • Active involvement in creating a personalized case plan, reflecting the participant’s individual needs and goals.
  4. Additional Procedural Requirements:
    • Successfully completing the agency’s application and acceptance process.
    • Passing criminal and sex offender background checks.

These requirements are designed to ensure that participants are not only eligible but also genuinely prepared and motivated to engage fully in the journey toward independent living, leveraging the support and resources the SIL program offers to foster their personal growth, stability, and success.
