Addressing the Challenge of Unaccounted Youth in Foster Systems
The U.S. foster care system supports over 390,000 children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, with a distressing issue being unreported cases of missing children. About 34,000 cases are unreported annually, with repeat disappearances being a significant concern. Racial disparities persist in the system, particularly in cases of missing children. In Georgia, cases of missing children possibly linked to human trafficking are alarmingly high. Improved reporting, attention to high-risk groups, enhanced support systems, and better training can potentially reduce this crisis.
